Zoning board approves controversial trucking company operation

In a recent government meeting, members unanimously approved a special use request for a trucking company to continue operations in an agricultural preservation zoning district in Akron Township. The request, submitted by Matt Lacour, was backed by both the zoning board of appeals and the land use committee, receiving 17 affirmative votes from members present.

The meeting also addressed a resolution from the County Infrastructure Committee regarding waste and recycling hauling contracts for multiple county facilities. However, the process faced scrutiny as only one company submitted a bid, leading to concerns about the lack of competition. Member Williams expressed disappointment over the single bid, noting that the county had previously experienced significant price increases—up to 40%—in waste management costs after GFL acquired Peoria Disposal Company, the previous contractor.

Despite the concerns, members acknowledged the necessity of securing waste collection services, with discussions highlighting the structured bidding process that allowed for flexibility in vendor responses. Member Rosenbaum abstained from voting due to a conflict of interest, while the remaining members proceeded with the approval, emphasizing the importance of maintaining waste management services despite the challenges faced in the bidding process.
