Water crisis deepens as community seeks urgent funding

During a recent government meeting, Judd Giffen, a civil engineer and farmer representing the Edelstein Water District, addressed critical issues facing the aging water system. Giffen, who has been involved with the Edelstein Water Coop for 25 years, highlighted the urgent need for improvements as the current infrastructure struggles with declining well production and outdated equipment.

The water board has doubled rates in an effort to raise funds for necessary upgrades, but Giffen emphasized that a new well is essential for redundancy and to address ongoing radium contamination issues. He proposed connecting to a treated water source from nearby Princeville, which has shown interest in collaborating on this initiative.

Giffen outlined a plan to establish a transmission line from Princeville to Edelstein, which is a prerequisite for securing additional funding for water treatment and system upgrades. He requested assistance from the board in the form of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, noting that the water coop and Princeville are each contributing $250,000 towards the project.

With 48 users currently relying on the system, Giffen stressed that the water supply challenges extend beyond Edelstein, underscoring the broader implications of the water crisis in the region. The meeting concluded with a call for support to address these pressing water infrastructure needs.
