City leaders clash over stalled development and road expansion plans

During a recent government meeting, community members voiced their concerns regarding local development projects, particularly focusing on the North and South Decathlon tax allocation districts and the long-awaited Panola Road expansion.

One resident highlighted the potential success of the North and South Decathlon districts, expressing hope for similar initiatives in Southeast DeKalb. However, frustrations were evident as another speaker lamented the lack of progress on a nearby site where trees were cut down in 2021 or 2022, leaving the area undeveloped and overgrown.

The Panola Road expansion was a significant topic of discussion, with residents clarifying that the project is not under the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) but is the responsibility of DeKalb County. The agreement stipulates that DeKalb County will cover 75% of the costs, while the City of Stonecrest will handle the remaining 25%. Concerns were raised about the impact of road expansions on local land and the need for sound barriers and improved traffic management.

A resident suggested that the city should consider constructing an interchange at Panola Road to alleviate traffic congestion, citing successful examples from other regions. They urged local officials to collaborate with state representatives to secure funding for necessary road improvements.
