SIU Foundation shatters records raising 46 million dollars

During a recent government meeting, significant discussions highlighted the achievements and initiatives of Southern Illinois University (SIU) and its School of Medicine, particularly focusing on student success, community engagement, and women's leadership in medicine.

One notable success story shared involved a former student who, after being informed he was just a few credits shy of graduating, returned to complete his degree. This accomplishment has been credited with launching his career in law enforcement, ultimately leading him to become the director of the United States Marshals Service. This narrative underscores the university's commitment to supporting students who may feel discouraged about their academic journeys.

Chancellor Lane emphasized the importance of the SIU Foundation's support, which has been instrumental in funding programs like the Seymour Bryson Future Scholars Program. This initiative has successfully enrolled nearly 50 students in a summer bridge program, boasting a success rate exceeding 90%. The foundation's efforts have contributed to a record-breaking fundraising total of over $46 million this year, marking a 51% increase from the previous year, and providing more than $5 million in scholarships to nearly 1,842 students.

The meeting also celebrated the achievements of women in leadership roles within the SIU School of Medicine. Four faculty members received national awards from the American Women Medical Association for their exemplary contributions to medicine and healthcare. These honorees include Dr. Stacy Satobia, recognized for her work in culinary medicine; Dr. Vidya Prakash, for her leadership in infectious diseases; Dr. Janet Albers, for her efforts in establishing a network of community health workers; and Dr. Kari Wolf, for her advocacy in developing the Behavioral Health Workforce Center in Illinois.

Additionally, Dr. Susan Hingle was announced as the incoming president of the American Women Medical Association for the fiscal year 2025, further highlighting the university's commitment to empowering women in the medical field.
