Undercover operation exposes human trafficking at Detroit hotel

In a recent court session, Sergeant Ellen Breaux of the Detroit Police Department's Vice Enforcement unit provided testimony regarding an undercover operation conducted on June 19-20, 2024. With over seven years of experience as a police officer, Breaux detailed her role during the operation, which focused on addressing issues related to class and human trafficking, as well as business licensing in Detroit.

Breaux recounted her observations while stationed in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn on East Jefferson Avenue. She reported witnessing a vehicle, driven by a defendant, drop off a female passenger in the hotel’s valet area. Breaux confirmed the identity of the passenger and communicated her observations to her team via radio, indicating the vehicle's arrival and the drop-off.

The court also addressed another case involving Damon Lamont Hubbard, who faced charges of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm and domestic violence. However, the session was complicated by the absence of a key witness, leading to a motion for dismissal. Hubbard, present in court, explained his choice of attire, stating he had limited clothing options due to his circumstances.

The proceedings highlighted the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in combating trafficking and related crimes in Detroit, as well as the challenges faced in the judicial process when witnesses are unavailable. The court will continue to address these cases in upcoming sessions.
