Woodstock declares National Pollinator Week to combat crisis

In a recent meeting, Woodstock Mayor Michael Caldwell proclaimed June 17-23, 2024, as National Pollinator Week, emphasizing the critical role of pollinators in maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting local economies. The mayor highlighted the alarming decline in bee populations due to habitat loss, poor nutrition, pesticide use, and parasites, urging community members to recognize the importance of pollinator conservation.

Caldwell noted that the city actively manages parks and public spaces to protect pollinators and their habitats, reinforcing Woodstock's status as an affiliate of Bee City USA. Jamie, a key community volunteer, shared initiatives aimed at raising pollinator awareness, including the establishment of butterfly gardens and an integrated pest management plan.

Additionally, the mayor proclaimed July 2024 as Parks and Recreation Month, acknowledging the vital contributions of parks and recreation to community health, wellness, and economic prosperity. He praised the recent approval of a $24 million parks bond by voters, which will fund new parks and trails, contrasting it with a neighboring city's rejection of a similar initiative.

The meeting concluded with announcements of upcoming community events, including a Family Fun Night on June 20 and the 28th Annual July 4th Spectacular Parade, set to take place on Independence Day. The mayor encouraged residents to participate in these events and appreciate the hard work of city staff in maintaining the community's parks and recreational facilities.
