In a recent government meeting, the airport manager was honored with the \"Airport Manager of the Year\" award, recognizing exceptional service across New Mexico. The manager expressed gratitude for the support received from colleagues and the community, highlighting the collaborative efforts of airport managers statewide.
The meeting also addressed operational changes at the local air tanker base. Due to a recent incident involving a large air tanker that damaged a hangar door, the U.S. Forest Service is conducting a safety review. As a result, no very large air tankers will be stationed at the base this year, which could lead to slower response times for firefighting efforts and reduced fuel sales for the airport. The manager indicated that if a fire requires a large tanker, it will be dispatched from Fort Huachuca, complicating emergency responses.
Additionally, the meeting included updates from the detention center, which is currently facing staffing challenges with five officer openings. However, one new officer has begun training, and three others are currently in training. The center is also working towards accreditation, with a trial period underway for uploading standards.
The detention center celebrated Officer Appreciation Week, recognizing Sergeant Dustin Gennader as Supervisor of the Year and Officer Alexis Gholson as Officer of the Year for their outstanding contributions. Both received plaques and challenge coins in acknowledgment of their dedication to service.
The meeting concluded with a call for further questions and comments, underscoring the importance of community support in both airport and detention center operations.
