Roadway project promises safer crossings and improved traffic flow

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving pedestrian safety and traffic flow along a key corridor. The project will address existing gaps in connectivity and enhance access across the roadway, particularly between Main Street and various local destinations, including a water park and a metro station. A new traffic signal will be installed at Main Street, featuring dedicated pedestrian crossings that will allow for safer movement across the road.

The project is currently in the engineering phase, with a contract approved in 2020. Officials anticipate returning for funding appropriations in approximately one to two years, with construction expected to begin around 2029. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has committed $13 million for intersection improvements but is negotiating with local authorities to transfer design responsibilities due to staffing constraints.

Additionally, discussions highlighted the importance of traffic calming measures, including narrowing road lanes to reduce vehicle speeds, which is crucial for enhancing pedestrian safety. While specific speed limit changes will be determined post-construction based on traffic studies, the project aims to create a safer environment for pedestrians, aligning with broader initiatives to decrease traffic-related fatalities.

County Administrator Sutton emphasized the need for clarity on whether this project represents a unique case that could prompt changes in standard procedures for future projects.
