County approves new police union contract amid housing crisis

In a recent government meeting, the Los Alamos County Council approved a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the county and the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA), Local Number 14. The agreement, which is set to last for three years until June 30, 2028, includes salary increases for police officers, corporals, and sergeants, with initial adjustments of approximately 4% for officers and corporals, and 3% for sergeants, effective from the first full pay period following ratification.

Deputy County Manager Madison presented the agreement, highlighting that it allows for annual salary increases based on performance appraisals, with potential raises of 1%, 2%, or 3% depending on employee evaluations. Additionally, the CBA includes a revised uniform allowance and a structured salary increase of 2% for the fiscal years 2026, 2027, and 2028.

Chris Ross, president of the local union chapter, emphasized the collaborative effort that led to the agreement and expressed concerns about the housing crisis affecting county employees. He noted that the average home price in the area exceeds $650,000, making home ownership unattainable for 70% of county employees. Ross urged the council to consider creative solutions for recruitment and retention, such as alternative work schedules and improved health insurance options.

The council unanimously approved the CBA, with a vote of 6-0, acknowledging the importance of the agreement for both the police force and the community. The meeting concluded with a call for continued efforts to address the housing challenges faced by county employees.
