Grandparents honored for vital role in childcare

In a recent meeting, the city council of Arvada, Colorado, officially proclaimed September 8, 2024, as Grandparents Day, recognizing the vital role grandparents play in the lives of young children. The resolution highlighted that, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, grandparents provide care for one in four children under the age of five, contributing an estimated $253 billion annually in free childcare. In Colorado alone, this translates to nearly 79,000 children benefiting from their grandparents' care.

The council emphasized the importance of grandparents in addressing the childcare crisis, particularly in areas where over 51% of residents live in childcare deserts with limited licensed options. Grandparents not only provide essential childcare but also foster intergenerational connections, sharing cultural traditions and offering guidance to new parents.

During the meeting, a community member shared personal experiences, illustrating the significant impact grandparents have on children's mental health and social-emotional development. The speaker recounted their own journey of stepping in to care for their granddaughter during the pandemic, underscoring the invaluable support grandparents offer families.

The proclamation was met with enthusiasm, and the council invited grandparents present at the meeting to participate in a commemorative photo, celebrating their contributions to the community.
