Community combats food insecurity with innovative summer programs

This year, three new summer programs funded by the USDA have been launched to combat food insecurity in the community. The programs, rebranded as Sunbucks, Sun Meals, and Sun Meals To Go, aim to provide essential support to families in need.

The Sunbucks program, previously known as the EBT card, offers a $120 debit card to students of school age who qualify for free or reduced meals. This initiative simplifies access to groceries, as eligible students automatically receive the card without needing to apply, provided their information is already in the system. For those who did not qualify during the school year, a separate application process is available.

In addition to Sunbucks, the Sun Meals program, formerly the summer food service program, provides meals on-site at schools where classes are held. This year, the program operated successfully at Oakdale and Chandler schools, targeting locations with a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced meals.

These initiatives reflect a concerted effort to address food insecurity and support families during the summer months, ensuring that children have access to nutritious meals.
