City launches comprehensive response to homelessness crisis

In a recent government meeting, city officials provided a comprehensive update on the ongoing response to homelessness in Somerville, particularly focusing on the 7 Hills area and Davis Square. Legislative Liaison Kimberly Hutter emphasized the city's commitment to addressing the situation with compassion and safety for both the unhoused and the broader community.

Chief Femino of the Somerville Police Department reported on the department's proactive measures, which include increased patrols and community engagement efforts aimed at connecting individuals in need with services. Since late August, police have conducted 379 proactive activities, including nearly 300 directed patrols in the affected areas. The department has also prioritized treatment over incarceration, in line with a city council directive from April 2021, resulting in a focus on drug distribution issues while providing support to those experiencing homelessness.

Director Karen Carroll from the Health and Human Services department detailed various outreach initiatives, including 18 encounters in the 7 Hills area over the past three months. Key activities included naloxone training, meal distributions, and assistance with healthcare enrollment. The department is also collaborating with the Somerville Homeless Coalition to enhance outreach efforts, particularly on weekends.

The meeting highlighted the city's ongoing efforts to address homelessness through data collection and analysis, with a focus on identifying gaps in services. Plans for a new sharps kiosk to safely dispose of needles were also discussed, alongside the establishment of additional shelter beds and a warming center for the upcoming winter months.
