Business Leaders Demand Transparency in Drug Treatment Center Plans

In a recent government meeting, representatives from the Portland Metro Chamber and the Central East Side Industrial Council voiced significant concerns regarding the implementation of Multnomah County's new drug addiction deflection system and treatment readiness center. Jay Clark, from the Portland Metro Chamber, emphasized the urgency of integrating the deflection and sobering services into a single operational system, urging the county to adhere to the rapid implementation timeline established earlier this year.

Clark highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in the operational management of the proposed facilities, stating that the Chamber would oppose any new center until a clear management plan is approved. He also called for the deflection system to be part of a Tri-County regional approach, ensuring comprehensive tracking and accountability measures.

Caroline Holcomb, executive director of the Central East Side Industrial Council, echoed these sentiments, expressing community apprehensions about the proposed center's location. She pointed out that the site is in close proximity to a preschool and a future community project aimed at enhancing safety. Holcomb criticized the county's lack of prior community engagement in the decision-making process, which she argued has led to significant concerns among local business owners.

Both representatives stressed the need for a transparent operational plan that addresses the potential external impacts of the center on the surrounding community. They urged the county to develop a fund to support businesses affected by the new facility and reiterated their commitment to working collaboratively with local government to ensure the success of the initiative while safeguarding community interests.
