Community rallies for long-awaited inclusive park project

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the long-awaited development of a large municipal park on the west side of town, designed to be inclusive for individuals of all ages and abilities. The project, which has been in the works since 2008, aims to address the lack of public access in the area, often referred to as a \"park desert.\"

After years of seeking funding, the project received a significant boost in 2022 with a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), alongside contributions from local donations and county funds. The park will feature a variety of amenities, including a labyrinth, sensory-friendly playground equipment, multi-use courts, and ample open spaces for recreation. It will also serve as a memorial for Billy Cordova, a beloved community leader who passed away in a motorcycle accident two years ago.

During the meeting, officials highlighted the need for additional funding to cover a budget shortfall of approximately $106,000. They proposed redirecting $49,000 earmarked for the Arizona Street Bridge Project to help bridge this gap. The bridge project has faced significant cost overruns, escalating from an initial estimate of $600,000 to over $2.3 million due to extensive engineering requirements.

The town has identified Summit Construction Group as the preferred contractor for the park project and has secured necessary building permits. However, to move forward, officials emphasized the importance of reallocating funds from other capital projects, including savings from previous initiatives, to ensure the park's completion.

The meeting concluded with a call for collaboration among county commissioners to support the park project, which is seen as a vital enhancement to the community's recreational infrastructure.
