Housing initiative approved to transform motels into affordable units

In a recent government meeting, the council approved a significant rezoning petition aimed at addressing local housing needs. The applicant, Brandon Scallion, presented plans to convert a motel into low-cost housing, specifically targeting vulnerable populations such as single mothers and the elderly on fixed incomes. Scallion emphasized that the project would provide all bills paid, ensuring residents have predictable monthly housing costs.

The proposed development will transform all 105 motel units into multifamily apartments, potentially accommodating over 200 individuals. Scallion reassured council members that current long-term hotel residents would have the opportunity to return to the renovated facility, which he noted would offer lower rates than traditional weekly hotel accommodations.

After a thorough discussion, the council unanimously voted to approve the rezoning from thoroughfare commercial to community services for the 1.75-acre property located at 1000 South Futrell Drive.
