School zone camera system proposal sparks community debate

During a recent government meeting, officials conducted the second reading of an ordinance aimed at implementing a school zone camera system to monitor speeding in North Miami Beach. The initiative is designed to enhance safety around local schools, with a focus on three public institutions: Reynolds, Fulford, and Sable Palm.

Two vendors, Vero Mobility and Ultimate, are currently under consideration for the project, although the selection process remains ongoing. Officials indicated that while there are six public schools in North Miami Beach, the camera system will initially cover only the three mentioned schools. There is potential for future expansion to include charter schools, but for now, the initiative is limited to public schools.

The meeting also clarified that the local high school and middle school are managed by the Miami Dade County school system, which has already established its own speed zone camera program with a different vendor. This distinction was made to address any confusion regarding the coverage of schools in the area.

As the meeting progressed, officials invited public comments, emphasizing the importance of community input on this safety initiative. The discussion highlighted a commitment to improving safety measures for students and the surrounding community.
