Advocates push for change to end cycle of violence

In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the ongoing efforts to combat violence and support victims within the community. A representative emphasized the importance of outreach in school systems, stating that discussions about violence prevention must start early to break the cycle of abuse.

The meeting provided a detailed overview of the services offered to victims over the past year. Notably, 602 unduplicated victims were served, including 103 children. The organization sheltered 32 victims and 46 children, collectively utilizing 890 days of shelter services. Additionally, the hotline received 3,190 calls, indicating a significant demand for support.

The bilingual advocate played a crucial role, assisting 50 Spanish-speaking clients and providing 209 translations. In terms of sexual assault advocacy, 449 victims were served, with two requiring medical advocacy and two needing forensic exams. The organization also facilitated nine sexual assault protection orders.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed the victim assistance program in Seward, which collaborates with the county attorney to provide comprehensive services to all crime victims. Financial assistance was also highlighted, with 27 clients receiving support for rent, totaling $36,000, alongside $325 allocated for medical or mental health needs.
