City leaders debate urgent water rate adjustments and animal shelter crisis

During a recent government meeting, the board addressed several key agenda items, including the postponement of a third-party review of the Fort Smith Animal Haven audit. The audit firm, Baker Tilly, was unavailable, leading to a motion to reschedule the discussion for the July 16th study session, which was unanimously approved.

The meeting also included reminders about upcoming events and schedule changes. Notably, there will be no meeting on July 2nd due to the Independence Day holiday, with city offices closed on July 4th. Residents were encouraged to attend a fireworks celebration on the riverfront, featuring local entertainment.

Director Devon Martin raised concerns regarding the upcoming water rate study, scheduled for discussion on July 11th. He proposed an amendment to the current agenda, suggesting that rates be raised only for 2024 based on a consultant's study, while delaying decisions for 2025. Martin emphasized the need for a thorough review of the city's long-term water funding strategy, particularly after a recent tour of local water facilities, which he deemed structurally sound.

Additionally, Director George Casas highlighted urgent conditions at the animal shelter, where high temperatures pose a risk to the animals. He called for immediate action to secure a climate-controlled building to ensure the welfare of the shelter's residents.

The meeting concluded with the transition to a citizens' forum, allowing community members to voice their concerns and suggestions.
