City tackles homeless encampments with major cleanup effort

In a recent government meeting, officials addressed pressing community concerns regarding neighborhood decay and homelessness in Fort Smith. City representatives emphasized their commitment to revitalizing neighborhoods that have been experiencing decline, acknowledging the frustrations of residents receiving notices about property conditions. They reassured citizens that city staff and inspectors are actively working to improve these areas.

A significant focus of the meeting was the recent cleanup of a large homeless encampment along the riverfront, which had been a major undertaking over the past six months. The encampment, estimated to have housed between 75 to 100 individuals, stretched from the trolley museum to the National Cemetery. Officials presented before-and-after photos of the area, showcasing the efforts made to restore the riverfront.

The cleanup was executed by JEI Incorporated, a national company with local ties, which coordinated with city officials and railroad representatives to address the unique challenges posed by the encampment's location near railroad tracks. The initiative not only involved the removal of tents and debris but also included the clearing of smaller vegetation to enhance the area’s safety and aesthetics.

In addition to the cleanup, city officials announced increased patrols by the Fort Smith Police Department to deter the re-establishment of encampments in the area.
