City proposes new park hours to combat vandalism and crime

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed proposed updates to the city’s parks ordinance, which has not been revised in over 30 years. The amendments aim to better align regulations with current operations and address issues arising from after-hours activities in parks.

Key changes include the establishment of a default closing time of 9 PM for smaller neighborhood parks, while larger parks with amenities designed for night use, such as sports facilities, will remain open until 11 PM. This adjustment is intended to enhance safety and reduce vandalism, as unlit areas have reportedly seen increased incidents of damage and illegal activities.

The ordinance also prohibits swimming in lakes and ponds, which are primarily intended for fishing, and restricts unauthorized vehicles from entering park grounds. Parks and Recreation officials emphasized that the changes will allow for more effective management of park patrols, enabling them to focus on areas that require more attention during late hours.

The meeting highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between accessibility for recreational activities and ensuring the safety and security of park users. Permits will still be available for events extending beyond the standard closing times, allowing for flexibility in park usage.
