City unveils ambitious 10 year parks and recreation plan

In a recent government meeting, city officials discussed a comprehensive 10-year strategic plan aimed at enhancing parks, arts, recreation, and trails within the community. The plan, presented by Steven Du, Principal of Conservation Techniques, is designed to create an innovative and inclusive system that promotes recreation, health, environmental conservation, and fiscal responsibility.

The meeting highlighted the extensive community engagement process that informed the plan, which included two surveys, open houses, and stakeholder discussions, engaging over 3,000 participants. The first survey focused on general usage and preferences, while the second prioritized specific projects. Notably, 98% of respondents indicated that parks and recreation opportunities are essential or important to their quality of life, with nearly 90% visiting these facilities at least once a month.

Key priorities identified by the community include revitalizing existing parks, developing new facilities, and expanding recreational options. The surveys revealed a consistent demand for renovations, particularly in East Yuma, and for amenities such as splash pads and pickleball courts.

The city plans to present the finalized document for adoption in July, with hopes that it will serve as a roadmap for future investments and partnerships to enhance the community's recreational landscape.
