Budget crisis prompts historic funding request

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the financial status and budgetary needs of the local National Park Service. The budget report highlighted a significant increase in donations, totaling $135,894, primarily attributed to memorial contributions and a notable $107,236 from the estate of Gary Owen Pich, a long-time resident of the area.

On the expense side, the report detailed a $31,000 allocation for building repairs and maintenance, which included $15,900 for new metal siding on the stage barn to prevent wildlife intrusion, as well as improvements to gutters and the print shop. Additionally, $6,000 was earmarked for electrical and heating work in a new building, with electrical utilities alone costing $1,247.

Officials expressed concerns over rising expenses, indicating that this is the first request for a budget increase in over a decade, underscoring the financial pressures faced by the service. The meeting concluded with an invitation for questions, signaling a willingness to engage with the community on these pressing issues.
