School Board Proposes Major Attendance Policy Overhaul

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed proposed updates to Policy 40 400, which governs student attendance across various school levels. The revisions aim to clarify attendance requirements in response to feedback from parents regarding the existing policy's complexity.

Currently, the policy stipulates a minimum number of attendance days for students: 164 days for elementary, 166 for middle school, and varying requirements for high school based on course structure. However, parents have expressed confusion over this framework, as it contrasts with the more straightforward way they track their children's absences.

To address these concerns, the proposed changes will shift the focus from minimum attendance days to maximum allowable absences. Under the new guidelines, elementary and middle school students will be permitted a combined total of 14 excused and unexcused absences per school year. For high school students, the policy will differentiate between semester-long and year-long courses, allowing a maximum of 5 absences per semester per class and 10 absences per year-long class.

These updates are expected to simplify attendance tracking for parents and provide clearer expectations for students, with the changes set to take effect before the next school year begins.
