Yakama Nation hosts vibrant Lamprey celebration this Friday

A recent government meeting highlighted the upcoming Willamette Falls Lamprey Celebration, an event organized by the Yakama Nation to honor the cultural significance of lamprey as a sacred first food. Aileen Harvey, a member of the Yakama Nation and watershed department manager for the Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission, emphasized the importance of the event, which will take place this Friday from 11 AM to 4 PM at Clackamas Park.

The celebration will feature boat tours, dancing, and educational speakers, showcasing the collaborative efforts to restore lamprey habitats. The event aims to engage the community and raise awareness about the ecological and cultural importance of lamprey.

Commissioner Morgan encouraged attendance, recalling his experience from the previous year, which included a unique rap performance about lamprey, illustrating the event's blend of culture and education. The meeting concluded with an invitation for further questions and discussions, as well as plans to promote the event through official channels.
