City launches innovative electric shuttle pilot program

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress and funding of a new pilot project aimed at enhancing public transportation through data-driven analytics and electric vehicles. The project, which has transitioned from a pilot phase to a more permanent operation, will utilize comprehensive data collection methods to track ridership patterns, including pick-up and drop-off locations, as well as daily passenger counts.

Mister Dawson highlighted the importance of both quantitative and qualitative data, emphasizing that a live dashboard will be available for real-time metrics. This data will not only inform adjustments to the service but also support potential expansions to other areas of the city.

Funding for the project is sourced from the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) budget, specifically allocated for parking solutions. Officials noted that while they are exploring additional grant opportunities, the current service is confined to the CRA boundary due to funding limitations.

The electric vehicles involved in the project have a range of approximately 116 miles and will be equipped with fast chargers at the station to minimize downtime during driver breaks. This operational strategy aims to optimize service efficiency throughout the 13-hour operational day.

As part of the pre-launch marketing efforts, officials are considering displaying a vehicle at the station to generate public interest ahead of the anticipated launch date of October 1. Additionally, the contract includes provisions for branding the vehicles, with a budget of $750 allocated for vehicle wraps featuring the project's logo.
