City Council Faces Controversy Over Paving Project Costs

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant infrastructure projects and funding concerns, particularly regarding a road improvement initiative involving the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

The meeting highlighted a troubling increase in project costs, with estimates reportedly more than double the original figure. Concerns were raised about the lack of clarity surrounding the reasons for this escalation, which was attributed to the need for additional design work due to the antiquated state of existing infrastructure. The city engineer noted that while ODOT solicited bids for the project, there was uncertainty about how many bids were received and whether the increase was justified.

Officials debated the urgency of taking immediate action on the project, which is slated to begin design work in 2024. While some members expressed the need for further clarification on the financial aspects, others suggested that the matter could be tabled for future discussion. A motion to postpone the decision was unanimously approved.

In addition to the road project, the council also addressed the ODOT Urban Paving initiative, which will see the paving of State Route 741 from North Lawn Avenue to I-75 in 2026. ODOT will cover 80% of the construction costs, with the city responsible for the remaining 20%, amounting to approximately $211,200. The council moved to prepare legislation to secure funding for this project.

Lastly, the meeting touched on the continuation of a successful partnership between the West Carrollton Schools and the Police Department, which has been in place for the past two years. This collaboration aims to enhance safety and community relations within the school district.
