Detective Paul honored for cracking major fraud ring

During a recent government meeting, Mill Creek precinct chief Christine Petty Brown honored Detective Darren Paul as the Officer of the Month for May 2024, recognizing his significant contributions to the community. Detective Paul, who will transition to a fraud detective role within the department's shared services, was commended for his work in dismantling a check fraud ring that resulted in over $1 million in losses for a local financial institution. His investigative efforts led to the identification of 44 suspects and the implementation of a training program for bank employees to prevent future scams.

The meeting also addressed the ongoing reorganization of the Unified Police Department (UPD) following legislative changes that separated the Salt Lake County sheriff's office from UPD. This restructuring aims to enhance efficiency and save taxpayer money, with UPD relocating to a new office space that will house additional officers and various departmental functions, including forensics and finance. Despite a slight increase in costs for Mill Creek residents, city officials assured that there would be no tax increase this fall.

The council also discussed the agenda for the meeting, with plans to reorder items to facilitate public comment and provide updates on the city's developments, including the status of the Groupon facility.
