Officers risk lives to save man from raging river

In a recent government meeting, the Mill Creek Unified Police Department honored Officer Mike Erickson as the Officer of the Month for June 2024, recognizing his heroic actions during a life-threatening incident. Lieutenant Luis Lovato presented the commendation, highlighting a dramatic rescue that took place on June 18, 2024.

Officers from the Unified Police Department and the Taylorsville Police Department responded to a distress call regarding a male who was attempting suicide at the Jordan River. Witnesses reported seeing the individual hanging from a noose after jumping off a bridge. Upon arrival, Officers Meekum and Stone bravely entered the river to cut the rope, but the swift current began to carry them downstream. Without hesitation, Officer Erickson jumped into the turbulent waters to assist his colleagues, ultimately helping to pull the unconscious man to safety.

Thanks to the quick actions of the officers, the male was retrieved from the river and received immediate medical attention, including CPR from paramedics. He was subsequently transported to a hospital and survived the ordeal. Lieutenant Lovato emphasized the life-risking bravery displayed by the officers, stating that their actions were crucial in saving the man's life.

The meeting underscored the importance of recognizing such acts of heroism within the community. Chief Mazerin also prepared a certificate of commendation for Officer Erickson, who was unable to attend the meeting but is expected to be recognized at a future gathering. The discussion highlighted the dangers faced by first responders and the critical impact of their swift actions in emergency situations.
