City approves significant raises for paramedics and EMTs

In a recent government meeting, significant financial decisions were made regarding salary increases for emergency services, library funding, and infrastructure improvements.

The fire department will see a two-step salary raise for paramedics and a one-step raise for advanced EMTs, with the motion approved unanimously by the council. Additionally, a one-time contribution of $24,200 to the library was also approved, supplementing the annual maintenance budget of $148,500.

City Treasurer Steve Anderson proposed an increase in the gas adder rate, which had not been adjusted in 22 years. The council approved the increase from $2.30 to $3.82 per 1,000 cubic feet, reflecting the rising market costs of gas.

A cost-of-living raise of 3% for employees was also unanimously approved. Furthermore, Alderman Webb motioned for a 5-cent increase in property taxes, specifically earmarked for street paving, which will raise the annual budget for this purpose to $650,000. This increase builds on previous adjustments made in recent years to enhance funding for road maintenance.

The council also discussed the upcoming 2024-2025 budget, which includes a tax rate of $3.47 per $100 of assessed value. The public hearing for this budget was opened, allowing community members to voice their opinions, although no questions were raised during the session.
