Dixie Power Kite Festival celebrates 25 years with record donation

During a recent board meeting, the Dixie Power Kite Festival Committee celebrated its 25th anniversary by presenting a historic donation of $100,000 to the Washington County School District Foundation. This contribution marks the largest single donation in the festival's history, bringing the total donations over the past quarter-century to nearly $1 million. The festival, which attracts thousands of attendees each year, has become a significant community event in St. George, thanks in part to the leadership of Dixie Power CEO Liddell Laub and the dedicated efforts of volunteers and sponsors.

Rick Scofield, the festival chairman, emphasized the importance of literacy in education, linking the festival's mission to fostering reading and learning among students. He acknowledged the contributions of various sponsors, particularly Nets on Fire, and highlighted the extensive volunteer work that supports the event.

In addition to the kite festival recognition, the meeting also featured the presentation of the \"Excellence in Teaching about Agriculture\" award to Karen Webb from Hurricane Intermediate School. This award, presented by Utah State University’s Agriculture in the Classroom program, recognizes Webb's efforts in enhancing agricultural literacy among her students. She received a $500 grant to further her educational initiatives.

The meeting concluded with a recognition of five retirees from the school district, celebrating their contributions to education. The board then opened a public hearing regarding the district's budget, signaling the next steps in their fiscal planning.
