Community leaders unite for climate action and renewable energy

In a recent government meeting, the community power team, led by Mayor Aguirre and local council members, highlighted their active participation in various events aimed at promoting justice, equality, and sustainable practices within the San Diego region. Notably, they attended the Equality Awards, celebrating advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, and engaged with nearly 100 local leaders during the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce's annual leadership delegation to Sacramento, where they discussed pressing community issues with state officials.

The team also participated in the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation's dinner, emphasizing their commitment to inclusive economic development. A significant achievement was the recognition of the Padres and Petco Park, which received the Play to 0 Energy Champion Award from the Green Sports Alliance for their efforts in sustainability, supported by the community power team’s initiative to provide 100% renewable energy.

Additionally, the team attended the California Climate and Energy Forum, focusing on equitable climate action, and the American Public Power Association's National Conference, which showcased public power professionals and featured key speakers in the energy sector.

In outreach efforts, the team engaged with the community at events such as the Jackie Robinson YMCA's health fair and EcoFest, promoting health and environmental awareness. They also participated in San Diego's Community Climate Action Day, contributing to a local park cleanup.

Looking ahead, the community power team is set to launch a solar battery savings program, with contractor training sessions scheduled to facilitate enrollment and onboarding. They are also in the process of hiring for several key positions, including a project operations manager and a data engineer, with new team members expected to join by the end of July.
