Townhome fire safety regulations spark community debate

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed critical updates regarding fire safety regulations for residential buildings, specifically duplexes and townhomes. Currently, duplexes do not require a two-hour fire-rated firewall, but new townhome developments in Park Center will implement a mixed firewall system. Each pair of townhomes will have a one-hour firewall between them, while a two-hour firewall will be required between every two units, effectively treating them as duplexes.

The meeting also included a roll call vote, which passed unanimously, confirming the new regulations. Following the vote, council members shared community updates, including a reminder about the upcoming Fourth of July festivities, which will feature fireworks, a parade, and various activities.

Additionally, concerns were raised regarding traffic safety at the intersection of 85th and Bridal, where recent accidents have occurred. Council member Jim Schroeder requested an update on the status of a proposed roundabout at that location, emphasizing the need for clarity on approvals and budgeting, as well as potential interim solutions to enhance safety.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for community members to volunteer for the events organized by the community relations board, which plays a vital role in planning local celebrations.
