County manager search raises concerns over candidate qualifications

During a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around the county's camping ordinance and the ongoing search for a new county manager.

Suzanne VanHal raised concerns regarding potential loopholes in the camping ordinance, which was established in 2000. She highlighted that the current regulations allow camping on agricultural land only for owners or invited nonpaying guests, yet noted a troubling gap for properties over 35 acres. VanHal argued that this could permit large-scale camping without oversight or sanitation, urging the board to review and amend the ordinance to ensure that camping on agricultural land requires a conditional use permit or an outdoor event permit. She emphasized the importance of evolving regulations to maintain safety and compliance.

The meeting also addressed the county manager position, with a speaker expressing shock at the lack of qualified candidates from a pool of 21 applicants, which was narrowed down to four finalists. The speaker questioned the qualifications sought by the board, expressing concern over the extended search process for a new county manager, especially with Cindy Garza currently serving in an acting capacity.
