Community rallies around beloved teacher battling cancer

During a recent meeting at Woodbury High School, discussions highlighted the importance of education-based athletics and the positive impact of fine arts and extracurricular activities on student development. The school’s athletic program aims to provide students with role models and essential life skills, despite the competitive landscape of youth and college sports, which each generate approximately $1 billion.

The meeting revealed that participation rates in high school sports have seen slight fluctuations, with 51% of male students and 45% of female students engaging in state high school league sports. Notably, the number of students participating in three sports has increased, with 10 males and 5 females this year, although overall participation remains modest due to the significant commitment required.

A touching moment during the meeting was the recognition of Kent Getzlaf, a beloved teacher and football coach diagnosed with skin cancer two years ago. The community's support for Getzlaf was emphasized, particularly through initiatives by the girls' basketball team and neighboring schools, which included wearing special shirts in his honor.
