Final Kids Road Races Celebrate Decades of Community Spirit

In a heartfelt tribute during a recent government meeting, the longstanding legacy of the Brockton Kids Road Races was honored as coordinators Dave and Judy Gorman prepare to conclude nearly five decades of service. The races, which have introduced countless children to physical fitness and provided an affordable family program, will kick off their final season at DW Field Park.

Dave Gorman, who began organizing the races with his wife in 1976, shared that the initiative started as a school program but was revived after funding cuts threatened its continuation. With a passion for running, stemming from his own experiences on the Brockton High track and cross country teams, Gorman initially stepped in to ensure his children, Kevin and Kathy, could continue participating.

Over the years, the Gormans have coordinated more than 700 races, fostering a community spirit and encouraging youth engagement in athletics. As the final season approaches, the Gormans reflect on their journey, marking the end of an era for the beloved local event that has become a staple in the community for 47 years.
