Town debates $1.3 million road funding amid New Balance concerns

During a recent government meeting, town officials discussed several key articles related to public works funding, particularly focusing on road maintenance and improvements.

Article 22, which addressed public works equipment, was approved without opposition. Following this, Article 23 proposed raising $1.3 million for capital expenditures aimed at enhancing roads and sidewalks. The discussion surrounding this article revealed concerns about the town's road maintenance strategy, particularly in light of ongoing projects by New Balance, a local business.

One resident questioned whether New Balance would contribute financially to the repairs needed on Walnut Street, which is affected by their construction activities. Officials clarified that while New Balance is not providing direct funding for the roadwork, there is a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) agreement in place that may reimburse the town for some costs in the future.

Concerns were raised about the life expectancy of the paving work, with some residents expressing skepticism about the town's ability to maintain its roads effectively. A proposed amendment to reduce the funding for Article 23 by $37,328 was discussed but ultimately defeated, allowing the original funding request to pass.

Additionally, Article 24, which authorized the acceptance of approximately $172,112 from the State Department of Transportation for local road assistance, was also approved without opposition. Article 25 sought to extend the amounts voted in Articles 23 and 24 for various road projects, including paving on several streets throughout the town.

Overall, the meeting highlighted ongoing challenges in balancing community needs with financial constraints, particularly regarding infrastructure maintenance and the role of local businesses in supporting these efforts.
