Community rallies to rename park in honor of local legends

During a recent government meeting, the Atlantic Beach City Commission discussed a proposal to officially name a local park after community figures Garnet and Eleanor Ashby. The park, currently referred to as Marvin's Garden Park, has never been formally named by the city commission, despite having a sign and being recognized in some city documents.

Sandy Martin, who presented the proposal, explained that the park was informally named after her family's late dog, Marvin, who frequently visited the area. However, Martin and others believe that the Ashbys, who made significant contributions to the community, are more deserving of the honor. The Ashbys were noted for their extensive involvement in local initiatives, including the founding of Leadership Jacksonville and contributions to various community organizations.

The city manager's office, along with the public works and planning departments, reviewed the request and expressed no objections. The proposed name, Eleanor and Garnet Ashby Memorial Park, aligns with the city's new guidelines for naming parks and recreational areas.

Martin emphasized the Ashbys' legacy, highlighting their dedication to community service and their impact on the region. The commission is expected to consider the proposal further, reflecting on the importance of recognizing local figures who have positively influenced the community.
