City Hall Property Sale Sparks Community Discussion

In a recent meeting of the Redevelopment Agency (RDA), officials discussed the potential sale of the current city hall site and surrounding properties, including the Marie Chapel. This discussion follows a resolution passed earlier this summer, which authorized the exploration of selling these properties through a real estate agency.

During the meeting, Jared Yost, representing the real estate agency, presented an appraisal of the properties, which collectively span approximately 5.98 acres. The appraised value of the land, without any buildings, is estimated at $14 million, translating to about $55 per square foot. Yost emphasized that this valuation is competitive, particularly for a site located on State Street, and is based on a sales comparison approach, as the properties currently generate no income.

The properties are zoned under the Mixed-Use Commercial and Civic District (MCC), which aims to foster a vibrant cultural environment and enhance community connections. Yost noted that the appraisal process considered various factors, including legal uses and financial feasibility, to determine the maximum potential productivity of the land.

Public comments were invited following the presentation, although the board clarified that no voting would take place during this meeting. Instead, a decision on the sale is expected to be made in the following month. The discussion highlighted the RDA's commitment to reinvesting any proceeds from the sale into further economic and community development initiatives.
