The City of Issaquah is making significant strides in its environmental planning, particularly in enhancing its urban tree canopy. During a recent government meeting, officials outlined the progress made since partnering with Planet Geo in October 2023. The initiative is structured around four main phases, with the current focus on developing a draft plan that includes a vision statement and guiding principles.
The process began with a comprehensive baseline assessment, reviewing existing city policies and ordinances related to trees. As the year turned, the city engaged in public outreach, including an internal staff survey and community feedback sessions held in March and early April. The outreach efforts yielded 235 survey responses, with notable participation from millennials, who represented 40% of respondents—a demographic often underrepresented in such surveys.
The city is currently finalizing its goals and strategies, with plans to present a draft to the Park Board by the end of September. The ultimate aim is to bring recommendations to the full council by November or December, ensuring the project is completed by year-end.
Additionally, the city has collaborated with the University of Washington's Evans School to explore ways to achieve its ambitious goal of a 55% tree canopy coverage as part of its climate action plan. This partnership aims to identify opportunities for investment in both public parks and private properties, emphasizing a holistic approach to urban forestry in Issaquah.
