A disturbing video from the Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) has raised serious concerns about the facility's euthanasia practices, particularly regarding the death of a one-year-old dog named Chai. The footage reveals a botched euthanasia attempt that has been described by a veterinarian as \"torture.\"
Chai was surrendered to CACC by her owner and was characterized as affectionate and playful. However, the video shows her being euthanized not in a designated room but on the concrete floor of the main kennel area, visible to other dogs. Staff members, including CACC manager Kanita Hardnett Johnson, were present during the incident. The footage depicts Chai struggling as staff attempted multiple intravenous injections, which failed. After several attempts, a heart stick injection was administered, and staff left her to die alone on the floor.
The video, which spans over 37 minutes, shows staff members walking past Chai's body without confirming her death, ultimately discarding her into a cart with deceased animals. This raises significant ethical and legal questions, as state law mandates that animals must not be left alone during euthanasia and that their deaths must be confirmed.
Additionally, the euthanasia form filled out by staff inaccurately stated that Chai was euthanized via IV injection, omitting any mention of the heart stick method. This discrepancy, along with previous statements from CACC officials denying the use of heart stick euthanasia, has led to allegations of misconduct and violations of state law.
The incident has sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates and calls for accountability within CACC. The revelations from the video and accompanying documents highlight a troubling pattern of negligence and mismanagement at the facility, prompting demands for a thorough investigation into its euthanasia practices.
