Library faces budget crisis amid rising health costs

During a recent government meeting, library officials outlined significant financial challenges facing their institution as they prepare for the upcoming fiscal year. The library is grappling with a projected deficit of $7,727, primarily due to rising health insurance costs and the need for a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for staff.

Library manager Mindy, who is set to leave in July, did not require health insurance, but the next hire will. The current annual cost for health insurance is $14,000, and officials anticipate this expense will continue to rise over the next two years. Additionally, the library is looking to implement a 3% COLA for its staff, which would increase the pay of library assistants to approximately $11.47 per hour and the youth education coordinator's salary to $15.75 per hour.

Despite these financial strains, the library's funding sources remain stable, with no expected increases from the Dade County Board of Education or the city of Trenton. The Dade Board has confirmed that their appropriation will remain unchanged, while the city provided a substantial increase last year, leaving little room for further adjustments.

The library board is scheduled to meet at the end of June to discuss the COLA and the potential use of fund equity to cover the deficit. In a positive development, the library has successfully hired a new manager, with an announcement set to be made soon. The search committee, which included board members and staff, interviewed five candidates before making their decision.

As the library navigates these financial hurdles, officials expressed gratitude for the support received from the community and emphasized their commitment to maintaining quality services despite the challenges ahead.
