Community uncovers hidden history in abandoned cemetery

During a recent government meeting, a discussion emerged regarding a long-abandoned cemetery located in a local neighborhood. A resident recounted their childhood experiences exploring the site, which contains three graves, the most recent of which dates back to 1859. Over the years, the cemetery has fallen into disrepair, with trees overtaking the area.

In an effort to uncover the history of the graves, the resident reached out to Commissioner Edwards and Manager Gray, who collaborated on research efforts. Their findings revealed that one of the graves belongs to Adam B. Brinson, who passed away in 1959. Brinson's family history is notable; he and his wife had a son, Simeon Brinson, who was born and raised in Albany. After serving in the military, Simeon moved to Decatur County, where he became a significant figure, leading to the naming of Brinson, Georgia, and a post office in his honor.

This discovery highlights the importance of preserving local history and the potential for revitalizing the cemetery as a site of cultural significance. The community's interest in the cemetery may pave the way for future initiatives aimed at restoration and recognition of its historical value.
