Gullah Geechee Nation Appreciation Week celebrates rich heritage

In a recent meeting, the Liberty County Commission officially proclaimed the week of July 29 to August 5, 2023, as Gullah Geechee Nation Appreciation Week. This annual proclamation recognizes the cultural significance and contributions of the Gullah Geechee people, who are descendants of captive Africans brought to the coastal regions of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

The proclamation highlights the unique language, cuisine, and artistic expressions of the Gullah Geechee community, emphasizing their positive influence on the region's cultural landscape. It also notes the establishment of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor by Congress, aimed at preserving the history and heritage of this distinct group.

This year's theme, \"Gullah Geechee Taking a Stand and Healing the Land,\" underscores the importance of raising awareness and understanding of Gullah Geechee culture, fostering a deeper appreciation for their contributions to both state and national identity. Chairman Donald Lavett encouraged all citizens to participate in the celebrations, reinforcing the community's commitment to honoring and uplifting Gullah Geechee traditions.

The proclamation was signed on June 20, 2024, with plans to share it with Queen Chet, a notable figure in the Gullah Geechee community, as part of ongoing efforts to engage with the cultural corridor.
