City launches ambitious plan to boost local economy

Key discussions included the upgrade of the wayfinding system, which will involve relocating a kiosk to the education campus, and the launch of various promotional projects, including an economic development video designed for social media outreach.

The proposed budget for these initiatives totals $135,000, which encompasses a range of activities such as a home buyers program, a small business incubator, and a customer service survey. Officials emphasized the importance of advertising in industry-specific journals to ensure Fairburn's visibility among potential investors and businesses.

A significant focus was placed on the upcoming Fairburn Fall Festival, which officials believe offers a valuable opportunity for local businesses to gain exposure. Past festivals have reportedly led to substantial engagement, with one vendor receiving 100 applications in just a few hours. The city plans to further promote this event to encourage participation from local businesses.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted ongoing efforts to beautify downtown Fairburn, including a proposed Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) memorial at Duncan Park and a vacant space improvement program. The city is also working on a Downtown Dollars program to connect residents and visitors with local businesses through couponing.

Council members discussed the importance of cultural events, including the incorporation of a Black History Month celebration into the annual budget, responding to community feedback for more inclusive programming. There were also suggestions for enhancing literacy initiatives in collaboration with local libraries and educational programs.

In terms of public services, the general services department reported successful initiatives such as a street sweeper program that has covered over 308 miles of road and increased participation in community recycling efforts. Future goals include training staff on heavy equipment operation and improving public education on proper waste disposal practices.
