Commissioners seek urgent funding boost for critical water project

During a recent government meeting, commissioners discussed the urgent need for additional funding for a critical water treatment improvement project. Initially budgeted at $450,000 for the construction of a nuclear well, the project faced significant financial challenges after the anticipated $400,000 from the Indian Health Service, facilitated by the Cherokee Nation, was withdrawn due to federal budget constraints.

As a result, the estimated cost of the project has escalated from $974,000 to over $1 million. To address this shortfall, commissioners are requesting an increase of $200,000 to the original funding allocation. The CETA group plans to seek additional financing from Communities Unlimited to cover the remaining costs.

The construction of the Clearwell is deemed essential for meeting water demand, particularly during the summer months, highlighting the project's importance to the community's infrastructure and public health.
