Council seeks diverse voices for new equity task force

In a special town council meeting, three council members convened to interview applicants for the newly formed equity task force. Mayor and council members Jorgensen and Rooks were present, while council members Schechter and Saul Chambers were absent. The meeting's primary focus was to hear presentations from candidates vying for nine positions on the task force.

Susan Scarlato, the director of external affairs, outlined the selection process, which has been revamped to include a three-part system. The first round, already completed, involved a team of equity inclusion consultants and staff who evaluated applications and narrowed the pool to 16 candidates. The current meeting is dedicated to presentations from these candidates, each allotted five minutes to discuss their qualifications and answer clarifying questions from council members.

Rosa Sanchez, a returning applicant and a member of the Jacksonville community for 24 years, was the first to present. She shared her background as a DACA recipient and her current role as the director of client services for a nonprofit organization that supports survivors of domestic violence. Sanchez emphasized her commitment to the community and her desire to contribute to the equity task force, drawing on her experiences and the privilege of working with diverse populations.

The council's approach to this selection process marks a shift from traditional interview formats, focusing on presentations and clarifying questions to better inform their decision-making. The meeting is expected to conclude with further discussions on the next steps in the appointment process.
