City plans vibrant murals and veteran flags to boost tourism

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed plans to enhance the town square in Girard with a series of community-focused projects aimed at honoring local veterans and promoting tourism. The initiative includes the installation of 22 veteran flags around the square, a tribute inspired by similar displays in other towns, such as Columbus. While specific dates for the flag installation were not provided, the project is expected to foster a sense of community pride.

Additionally, four crosswalks will feature murals that celebrate local heritage and culture. These murals will not be placed on Highway 7 but will adorn the northeast and south sides of the square. The themes for the murals include a tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps, Kansas-related motifs such as sunflowers and honeybees, and representations of local history, including blue books and utensils.

The funding for these projects will come from main street grants, highlighting a commitment to enhancing the town's appeal and supporting tourism. The meeting served primarily as an update on these initiatives, with no formal approvals required at this stage. The city officials expressed enthusiasm for the developments, which are expected to enrich the community's cultural landscape.
