City plans historic square to save Townsend House

In a recent meeting, the redevelopment agency of Murray City approved the transfer of certain properties to the city, which are essential for the construction of the new city hall complex and the extension of Hanauer Street. The properties currently owned by the redevelopment agency will be integrated into the redesigned street layout, facilitating urban development in the area.

Additionally, the agency discussed the relocation of the historic Townsend House. The initial plan to move the structure faced challenges as the local company previously engaged for such tasks expressed concerns about their aging equipment and workforce. They recommended Wolf House and Building Movers, a firm experienced in handling significant projects, which provided a preliminary estimate of $400,000 for the move. However, this figure does not encompass additional costs for site preparation and stabilization, suggesting a total expenditure of at least $500,000 for the relocation.

In light of these costs, an alternative proposal emerged to preserve the Townsend House in its current location while creating a small historic square. This plan involves removing the adjacent Tea Rose Diner and restoring the Margaret Calhoun House, which is in worse condition. The proposed square would enhance the historic value of the area, connecting the two homes and providing a plaza space across from the nearby mansion. Both the Murray History Committee and the Arts Advisory Committee have endorsed this initiative, indicating community support for preserving the historical integrity of the site. Further discussions are anticipated regarding the future use of the properties involved.
