Residents demand action against dangerous e-bike use on sidewalks

During a recent government meeting, community concerns regarding safety on sidewalks in Incline Village were brought to the forefront. Resident Rick Steinberger, who has lived in the area for 25 years, expressed his apprehension about the increasing presence of electric bikes (e-bikes) on the sidewalks, which he described as narrow and potentially hazardous.

Steinberger highlighted that the sidewalks, referred to as trails by the county, are only eight feet wide at their widest point, making them less accommodating for both pedestrians and e-bike riders. He voiced a collective sentiment among neighbors, stating that many residents feel unsafe due to the weight and speed of e-bikes, which can weigh between 150 to 250 pounds. He urged the commissioners to reconsider the current regulations that allow e-bikes on sidewalks, suggesting that they either create a separate bike path or require e-bikes to be used on the streets.

The discussion reflects a growing concern in Washoe County about the safety of pedestrian spaces as e-bike usage increases. Steinberger's call for action emphasizes the need for common sense solutions to ensure the safety of all residents who utilize these pathways. The meeting also featured other community members, including Rhonda Tycer, who has been an active voter in the area for over three decades, indicating a strong civic engagement among residents regarding local issues.
