University tackles campus camping crisis with housing solutions

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on Cal Poly's stance regarding camping on campus, particularly in light of stalled state legislation aimed at permitting camping at college campuses. Currently, very few campuses allow this practice due to concerns over sanitation and safety, a sentiment echoed by local agencies, including the county, which prohibits camping in its parking lots.

Officials emphasized that before resorting to ticketing individuals camping on campus, they had explored numerous alternatives to assist those affected. These included offering subsidized housing options and directing individuals to suitable parking areas, such as the KOA campground. The university collaborated with local service providers to ensure that individuals received necessary support, rather than simply evicting them without assistance.

Despite the availability of approximately 300 housing spaces for students last year, some individuals opted against university housing due to personal circumstances, such as pet ownership or difficulty adhering to housing regulations. The university is currently expanding its housing capacity, as evidenced by ongoing construction projects, in anticipation of continued enrollment growth, which has averaged around 4% annually.

However, the broader context reveals challenges faced by many Northern California institutions, which are grappling with declining enrollment as students increasingly opt for vocational training over traditional college education.
